Celebrate the Freedom of Sexual Purity

freedom-cmyk-largeI woke up this morning stirred with so many thoughts.  There are days when I find myself so burdened for men who are struggling with sexual purity.  Today is one of those days.  Today is also the 4th of July, a day in which we celebrate our nation’s freedom & also those who have fought to protect us.  As I was thinking about this freedom that we all experience everyday, I couldn’t help but to think about another kind of freedom to celebrate — one that many do not experience: freedom from sexual impurity and addictions.

I think that as time passes, the battle for sexual purity in our culture will become more and more difficult.  All the more reason we need weapons to fight with: The power of the Holy Spirit, God’s Word, accountability through relationships, & a fierce conviction that we’ll do WHATEVER we have to do to stay sexual pure.  A particular Scripture struck me this morning:

2 Timothy 2:22 says this: “Flee the evil desires of youth and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”

What a powerful admonition! There three really important action steps that all of us should take within this Scripture that I’d like to quickly reflect on.  I once heard this Scripture referred as the “Run from, Run to, Run with” verse.  Let’s think on these actions.

  1. RUN FROM…the evil desires of youth.  Simply put, run from anything that would cause any kind of compromise in your life or cause a separation between you and your integrity.  Integrity is so vitally important in 2013. It always has been.  And with so many traps in this world that keep us from experiencing God’s best for our lives, it’s important that we continue to run!
  2. RUN TO(WARDS)…righteousness.  Another way of thinking about “righteousness” is the act of pursuing God’s approval! God loves integrity, purity, & a heart that yearns to please Him.  A heart that yearns to filled by Him & Him alone.  I’ve often found that in order to truly live rightly, we must be broken of our sin. We must understand how much we have hurt ourselves & hurt others.
  3. RUN WITH…those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.  There’s not much to say here other than this monumental fact: We need each other! Accountability is for everyone.  We cannot possibly walk in purity without the help of others, without having relationships with others who are helping us to become better everyday.

So on this 4th of July, as you watch the fireworks, grill out with the family, & celebrate all the freedoms of being an American citizen, remember there is another kind of freedom that you can have and celebrate: The freedom of living with sexual integrity and being a person who God approves.
